The Silly Smock is an arts & crafts playroom and art studio where kids can develop creativity, learn artistic expression, exercise fine motor skills, socialize, get messy, and have fun! We have lots of fun events and classes for babies to adults, all geared towards art being utilized to teach abstract and creative thinking.
I thought of the idea for The Silly Smock because I am an artist and art lover who wanted to share that with my children (and now with your kids too). I understood the importance that arts and crafts have on child development - Art is so full of colors, textures, and open-ended possibilities. BUT, art can be really messy and as a mother of two small kids I was barely on top of the messes made by clothing, food, and toys. I REALLY wanted my kids to experience art and paint with all different tools. I wanted them to have play dough, and glue, and all different messy art supplies.… BUT, I dreaded the cleaning up. I really wanted to outsource the mess! So, I searched all around for art classes or art spaces for my son (who was around 1 at the time) to experience the fun of beautiful, messy art. I just didn’t find it. So, I came up with the idea of the The Silly Smock. A creative space where you can bring your kids to express their creativity and experience all the fun of making whatever type of artistic masterpieces their hearts desires, with every different type of medium, and you (the parents) can rest assured that your home now has one less mess to clean.
Over time our little art playroom has grown into a child-directed, process-based, free-form art program. Our studio utilizes art as a tool to develop creative thinking. What do those terms (child-directed, process-based, free-form) mean? Simply, we let the kids guide their own projects and utilize art as a form of expression. We don’t strive to produce ‘Pinterest worthy’ pieces, rather pieces that have their own story - one that was created by your child and one that Shows your child’s personality and stage in development.
